Ellie Greenwood Wins the 89th Annual Comrades Marathon
Congratulations to Ellie Greenwood on winning the 89th Annual Comrades Marathon – the world’s oldest and most prestigious Ultra Marathon.
The Comrades has been run since 1921 on an 89 km. course between Durban and Pietermaritzburg, South Africa. Over 18,000 runners started yesterday's race.
Ellie crossed the finish line in six hours, 18 minutes and 15 seconds (6:18.15) becoming the first athlete from outside Eastern Europe in 11 years to win the race. She came from behind in the closing miles to overtake the Russian twins, Elena and Oleysa Nurglaieva, who came second and third respectively. Between them they had won the previous 10 races. The men’s division was won by South African Bongmusa Mthembu in 5:26:34.
“Ellie looked great crossing the line in her canary yellow PACE TrueBlue Sundog sunglasses and we couldn’t be happier for her,” said Rod Hoogstraten, President of Sundog Eyewear. “The performance and comfort of my PACE glasses was exceptional and they will forever be remembered as the glasses I won the Comrades in”, commented Greenwood.
